I was thinking about auto repair marketing the other day while reading a great article and I came across two quotes I wanted to share with you.

Two important points jump out at me. First as Henry Ford pointed out, your customers rarely know exactly what they want from you. They focus on getting the car fixed, but they aren't consciously aware of the fact that they also want to be entertained, they want to be pampered, and they want to be special. All of these needs are below the surface and yet surprisingly, more powerful than the simple need to have their car fixed.

The next highly valuable point was made by Steve Jobs. To be successful it's important to get your information from many different and diverse sources; to pay attention to the whispers around you. Some of my most successful auto repair marketing ideas have been borrowed from other industries, or people that most auto repair shop owners thought were crazy. When I hear the same whispers from several unrelated sources they really get my attention.

As Henry and Steve both point out, knowing your customer is real power when it comes to auto repair marketing and your business. How often do you talk to your clients? I don't mean just ask them for their keys; I mean really talk to them and find out what are the forces driving their buying decisions today. Their answers can guide you to some amazingly profitable discoveries.

Start a business card collection! Collect a business card from everyone who comes into your shop. Collect a business card from every local business you go to. Restaurants, dry cleaners, banks, etc... wherever you go. At the end of each day post all of the cards you've collected on a cork board right next to the desk where you write up customers. During the write up process customers will stare at the board looking for people or businesses that they are familiar with.
