A pest control business can be a very profitable business to start and operate. The nice thing about a pest control business, is that it is surprisingly simple to start, and can also be started with a small budget.

One of the first steps to starting a pest control business is to create a general plan. What this means is that you need to decide what services you're going to offer, such as whether you'll specialize in spiders or if you'll take care of anything that crawls.

Next, you'll want to decide what business model you'll follow. For example, you might only offer one-time services, or you might aim to sign up customers for at least a year's worth of service. Working on a contract basis is much more profitable.

You will also obviously need your state and local licenses and liability insurance. Contact your city and state offices to find out what licenses you'll need for your specific state. Usually there will be a pesticide license through your state's agriculture department, and then you'll need a business license from the city you operate in. But, these regulations vary from state to state, so make sure you find out exactly what your location requires.

Liability insurance is simply a necessary evil of being in a service business. Once you have an idea of the way you want to take your business, the next step is to start getting the things you'll need planned out.

First and foremost, you'll need a truck. If you're starting on a shoestring budget, you might consider selling your car and getting a truck for servicing that will also serve as your personal vehicle. You'll get some good tax benefits this way.

Next, you'll need the basic spraying equipment which will consist of a 30-50 gallon water tank, a pump, a hand sprayer, and a backpack sprayer. This should be all you'll need to get started, and you'll accumulate more advanced equipment along your way.

You'll now want to choose what products you'll use. The best way to do this is to contact your local pesticide chemical depot and the pest control rep will be able to guide you as to what other companies are using, as well as a good lineup of products to get you started.

Next, you need to plan out your marketing methods. You can sell pest control door-to-door, use flyers, yellow-page ads, internet ads, or social media marketing. There is a lot of opportunity for small, local businesses online these days.

Those are the essentials of starting a pest control business. The hardest part for most people is just taking the jump and getting started. Remember, you don't need to know it all before you get started. You'll learn everything you need to know as you go. Just make sure to set things up the right way the first time, and you'll do fine.
